  32.                   Configuration Notes for Netscape 2.01
  33. ==============================================================================

  35. Configuration Files:
  36.  
  37.             With release 2.01 of the Netscape Navigator, a new directory
  38.             is created in which configuration files are placed.  This
  39.             directory is called `$HOME/.netscape'.  Existing 1.1 configuration
  40.             information is copied into this directory upon first execution
  41.             of Netscape.  A dialog is presented asking whether or not you
  42.             would like to automatically delete your 1.1 files.
  43.  
  44.         If you do not choose to delete the old files, then they will
  45.         continue to be used by older versions of Netscape, but version
  46.         2.01 and newer will never touch them.
  47.  
  48.             If you have a file or directory in $HOME called .netscape,
  49.             you should rename it prior to running version 2.01.
  50.         If you don't, it will be renamed for you, to `.netscape.BAK'.
  51.  
  52. Mail:
  53.  
  54.             Please see the Release Notes for important information on 
  55.             configuring and using Netscape Mail.  Knowing how to
  56.             configure and use Netscape Mail will prevent you from
  57.             losing mail messages.

  59. Java Applet Support:
  60.  
  61.             Java Applet support is available for SunOS 4.1, Solaris 2.3, 
  62.             Solaris 2.4, HPUX, IRIX and Linux and OSF1.  
  63.  
  64.             To run Java applets with the Java-enabled version, the
  65.             Navigator needs to be able to load Java class files from a file
  66.             called moz2_01.zip.  This file is included in the distribution,
  67.             but must be moved to any of these directories:
  68.  
  69.             The current directory
  70.                 /usr/local/netscape/java/classes
  71.         /usr/local/lib/netscape
  72.                 $HOME/.netscape
  73.  
  74.             If you were running Java with an earlier beta version of the 
  75.             Netscape Navigator, you need to replace your old moz2_0.car file
  76.             or old moz2_0.zip file with the new moz2_01.zip file supplied in 
  77.             this distribution.

  82.                           Installation Instructions

  85. Installation of Netscape is very simple: unpack the tar file, and run 
  86. the resultant executable.  But there are, of course, a few exceptions...
  87.  
  88. AIX:        Netscape requires AIX 3.2.5 with the X11R5 and Motif 1.2 libraries.
  89.             If you are running an older version of the operating system, you 
  90.             will get undefined symbols at run-time; unfortunately, the only 
  91.             solution is to upgrade to a more recent version of the OS.
  92.  
  93. SunOS 4.1:  The SunOS 4.1 package comes with two executables: netscape and
  94.             netscape_dns.  This is because Suns use two different,
  95.             incompatible methods of resolving host names (Domain Name Service,
  96.             and Network Information Service, formerly known as Yellow Pages.)
  97.             A given site only need install one of these executables.
  98.  
  99.             It is usually possible to configure your YP/NIS server to consult
  100.             a DNS server for resolution of hosts not in the YP maps.  Consult
  101.             your system administrator for details.
  102.  
  103. Solaris 2.4:
  104.             The Solaris 2.4 Navigator is dynamically linked with the X and
  105.             Motif libraries. If the Motif dynamic libraries are not
  106.             properly installed, the Navigator will exit with this error:
  107.  
  108.             ld.so.1: netscape: fatal: libXm.so.3: can't open file: errno=2
  109.  
  110.             Installing Motif dynamic libraries will get the navigator
  111.             working. If you cannot install the Motif libraries, you
  112.             can run the Navigator for Solaris 2.3 on your Solaris 2.4
  113.             machine.

  116. SunOS 4.1, Linux, and BSDI:
  117.             These distributions also includes a directory called "nls".
  118.             This directory is a standard part of the MIT X11R5 distribution,
  119.             but is not included with X11R4- or X11R6-based systems (such as
  120.             OpenWindows 3.0 or earlier, and XFree86 3.1 or later.)
  121.  
  122.             On these systems, Netscape has been linked against X11R5 (because
  123.             Motif 1.2.4 has some bad bugs in conjunction with with X11R6.)
  124.             Unfortunately, X11R5 has one rather serious bug, which is that if
  125.             this "nls" directory does not exist, the program will dump core
  126.             any time you try to copy or paste to or from a text field!
  127.  
  128.             So, if you don't have the "nls" directory on your system, you will
  129.             need to install it first.  Here is where Netscape looks for it 
  130.             (these default pathnames are hardcoded into the executable):

  132.                 SunOS 4.1:  /usr/lib/X11/nls/
  133.                 Linux:      /usr/X386/lib/X11/nls/
  134.                 BSDI:       /usr/X11/lib/X11/nls/
  135.  
  136.             If you choose not to create the directory there, then you must
  137.             set the $XNLSPATH environment variable to the directory where you
  138.             did install it.
  139.  
  140. NetBSD, FreeBSD:
  141.             We have been told (but have not verified) that the BSDI binaries
  142.             will work on x86 systems running NetBSD 1.0 or FreeBSD 2.0 (but
  143.             not FreeBSD 1.1.5.1.)
  144.  
  145.  * Included with all distributions is a file called XKeysymDB.  Without this
  146.    file, many warnings about "unknown keysyms" will be generated when the
  147.    program starts up, and most keyboard equivalents won't work.  This is a
  148.    general problem with running Motif programs on systems not configured for
  149.    Motif, and so will be necessary on most Sun systems.
  150.  
  151.    This file is included with all packages because some systems have an older
  152.    version of this file, so you may still get some warnings.  The XKeysymDB
  153.    file normally goes in /usr/lib/X11/XKeysymDB or /usr/openwin/lib/XKeysymDB,
  154.    but you can override that with $XKEYSYMDB.
  155.  
  156.  * Also included with all distributions is a file called Netscape.ad, which
  157.    lists the default resources which are built in to the program.  It is
  158.    not necessary to install this; it is provided for informational purposes.
  159.    See the comment at the top of the file for more information.
  160.  
  161.  * If you get a "Cannot locate host" dialog at startup, this is a sign of
  162.    problems related to name resolution.  If you're on a Sun, see the comments
  163.    above about the two executables.
  164.  
  165.  * If you get a "Cannot connect to host" dialog at startup, it could mean that
  166.    you are behind a firewall, and need to tell Netscape about your SOCKS
  167.    or proxy server.  See Options Menu -> Network... -> Proxies,
  168.    or consult your system administrator.

  170.  * Please read the release notes under "Help -> Release Notes".  This
  171.    document is updated as problems are found, so please check it before 
  172.    reporting a bug.

  174.  * To unpack a compressed tar file into the current directory, use some 
  175.    variation of the following command:

  179.  * The files ending with ".gz" contain the exact same data, but are
  180.    smaller because they are compressed with `gzip' rather than
  181.    `compress'.  If you have gzip on your system, you can unpack
  182.    these files with

  186.  * And remember, it's spelled N-e-t-s-c-a-p-e, but it's pronounced "Mozilla."
